&lt;p&gt;I certainly believe (from experience) that the concept of &quot;small parts&quot; is a better way of crafting software (and systems). I also feel that like every other craft the &lt;em&gt;size_of_the_part&lt;/em&gt; is just as critical as choosing to build from small parts in the first place.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;Applying this concept to Java / Clojure libraries to build applications, I have started some work here -- http://code.google.com/p/bitumenframework/&lt;/p&gt;

		<description>&lt;p&gt;I agree that the software industry would benefit from well constructed rigorous testing of ideas such as then.  However, that is outside my abilities as a software craftsperson.  I can only report my experiences with the techniques and tools i have tried.  Hopefully my experiences will be of some benefit to others.  If they happen to inform the design of a more scientifically rigorous exploration of this area all the better.&lt;/p&gt;

Software development seems, at best, tangentially related to Computer Science. I still hope that some day developers will provide quantifiable evidence to support their contentions. I&#039;m rather tired of hearing about their opnions are that thus and such is a great idea and that it what they like.&lt;/p&gt;
